Vacuum Heat Treating

Vacuum heat treating is the process of performing various types of the heat treatments (Annealing, Quench and Tempering, Aging etc.) inside a vacuum chamber at a very low pressure.

Irwin Automation VacuumThe benefit of vacuum heating treating is mainly to preserve a good surface finish on the material. Finished parts or materials can be vacuum heat treated to achieve the necessary properties without the formation of scale or oxidation on the surface. Some alloys must be heat treated in a vacuum due to high levels of reactivity to oxygen and hydrogen that are present in standard furnace atmospheres at high temperatures.

Typical applications – Superalloys, some stainless steels, brass and copper alloys, some titanium alloys
